“Never thought CSK would pick me” – Sri Lankan spinner narrates inspirational journey under MS Dhoni

Maheesh Theeksana

The IPL 2022 hasn’t been a particularly memorable season for Chennai Super Kings, but despite their poor showing this year, CSK have produced players who have made an impression. Devon Conway has three half-centuries to his name, while Shivam Dube has shown that he has all the makings of one of the cleanest strikers in the game.

Despite Deepak Chahar’s injury, which has put him out of the IPL till 2022, CSK’s bowling has been well-managed by Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary, and Tushar Deshpande, who have all responded effectively.

Maheesh Theekshana of Sri Lanka is one of these young men who has turned heads. In eight games, the mystery spinner has 12 wickets, including a best of 4/33 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Theekshana was selected for 70 lakh during the IPL 2022 auction and has proven to be a good investment for CSK.

However, representing CSK was not an easy task. The 21-year-old bowler detailed how he overcame physical challenges to build a reputation for himself and realise his cricketing ambitions.

In 2022,”I had a chat with MS Dhoni. I was with CSK last year too as a net bowler. Never thought they would bid for me or pick me this year”. He also said that Ajantha Mendis was his coach for the last two-three years. In 2020, he had a chat with Ajantha Mendis.

“I was 117 kg at that time (U-19 days), so I had to work harder to get my weight and skin folds down in the yo-yo test. In 2020, I got everything down and brought my fitness to the (required) level. I started to do more hard work on my body,” Theekshana said, a video of which was uploaded on CSK’s Twitter.

He also said that dhoni has a lot of skills, be it cricket, football, or table tennis. I think he can do anything. It is a dream come true to play here. CSK will face their rivals Mumbai Indians on 12th May in IPL 2022.
