The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt the cricket world a lot. Most recently, the International Cricket Council had to call off the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 in Zimbabwe because of the new variant. The Thailand women’s cricket team was performing exceptionally well in the competition. They had won three of their first four matches and were number one in their group’s standings.
However, the International Cricket Council decided to cancel the competition and award the last three spots in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 to the Pakistan women’s cricket team, Bangladesh women’s cricket team and West Indies women’s cricket team. The Bangladesh women’s cricket team qualified for the first time ever in a Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.
The Thailand women’s cricket team had qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup which happened in Australia in 2020. It seemed possible that the Thailand women’s cricket team qualified for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 scheduled to take place in New Zealand. However, that dream has now ended.
ICC awarded the three spots to the higher-ranked teams on the ICC Rankings. Because of that rule, Thailand failed to qualify.
