Indian Premier League is a cash-rich tournament, and this is one of the main causes for overseas cricketers to be part of it. Of course, the majority is due to cricketing reasons. Nevertheless, most players get paid well in IPL. However, including both overseas and domestic players, a few are unlucky in that aspect. In this article, we take a look at the list of six capped cricketers who are currently underpaid in IPL.
A player’s salary in IPL is dependent on auctions and retentions. Hence, the dynamics of a franchise’s entire squad composition result in what a player takes home as his pay packet. Hence, irrespective of the quality of a player, sometimes, he might get paid less.
1) Jasprit Bumrah – INR 7 Crore
Jasprit Bumrah is one of the capped cricketers who are currently underpaid in IPL. Although a sum of INR 7 CR is still good, compared to the salary of other pacers in the competition, Bumrah earns very little. He is arguably the best bowler in the competition, and hence, it seems that he is underpaid. Moreover, with pacers like Rile Meredith earning more than him, it seems unfair for Bumrah.
2) Kane Williamson – INR 3 Crore
Kane Williamson is currently the captain and the most important batsman of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Yet, he earns less than most other members of the squad. Initially, when he came to IPL, as well, Williamson had the tag of a Test cricketer and hence, SRH got him for cheap.
3) Mayank Agarwal – INR 1 Crore
Mayank Agarwal has led the franchise in one game so far and has also been the second-best batsman for Punjab Kings. He is also one of the most experienced domestic cricketers in the team. Despite this, he earns just INR 1 crore. Around 2018, Mayank’s IPL form was not great and this was the reason for the low bid.
4) Deepak Chahar – INR 0.8 Crore
Deepak Chahar is also one of the capped cricketers who are currently underpaid in IPL. Despite being one of the best powerplay bowlers in the competition, Chahar just earns under a crore. When he was purchased in 2018, Chahar was fairly new, and hence, his salary did not hit the roof. However, in the IPL 2022 mega auctions, if he is not retained by CSK, Chahar’s bid is likely to be high.
5) Prithvi Shaw – INR 1.2 Crore
Prithvi Shaw was a U19 cricketer when he was purchased by Delhi Capitals in 2018. However, at the moment, he is the first-choice opener for the team, along with Shikhar Dhawan. It also would not be a surprise if he gets retained ahead of IPL 2022. Shaw’s performances have also been exceptional, and hence, his salary seems less.
6) Suryakumar Yadav – INR 3.2 Crore
Suryakumar Yadav has been one of the best batsmen in the league in the last three seasons. He has also made his India debut and currently looks to nail down a middle-order spot in the country’s limited-overs squad. Despite this, SKY’s salary is just INR 3.2 crores. This is less for the impact he has had in the last few years.
