Watch: Fanboy moment as Sunil Gavaskar runs into CSK lap of honour; asks MS Dhoni to sign on his shirt

In their most recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 home game, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by MS Dhoni, suffered a comprehensive defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The KKR successfully chased down a target of 145 with six wickets in hand and nine balls remaining.

The winning runs were scored by captain Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh, who both achieved match-winning half-centuries. Rana finished unbeaten on 57 runs off 44 balls, while Rinku contributed 54 runs off 43 deliveries. Their partnership was crucial in setting up KKR’s chase, especially after losing their first three wickets for 33 runs inside the fifth over.

Although Rana and Rinku’s partnership was undoubtedly a highlight of the game, the most memorable moment of the night actually occurred after the match.

During a lap around the Chepauk where CSK players were handing out gifts to fans, former India captain and current IPL 2023 commentator, Sunil Gavaskar, ran towards MS Dhoni and requested his autograph on his shirt. The moment created quite a buzz among fans and cricket enthusiasts alike.

Following the autograph request, Dhoni and Gavaskar shared a warm hug, adding to the excitement of the moment. Later, during the commentary, Gavaskar humorously requested a new pink shirt for the remaining games, having just received Dhoni’s autograph on his current one.

KKR, led by Rana, successfully chased down the target of 145, finishing at 147 for four in just 18.3 overs. Rana’s exceptional performance, in particular, was highlighted, as he took advantage of a dropped chance to lead his team to victory.

KKR’s victory was significantly aided by the outstanding bowling performance of spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, who picked up two wickets each, restricting CSK’s score to a manageable total.

However, the defeat has potentially delayed CSK’s progress towards securing a play-off berth, as the team currently stands in second place with 15 points.

In contrast, KKR’s victory has taken them to 12 points with one match left to play in the league stage of the tournament. However, their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs now depend on the outcome of other matches as well.
