Cricket South Africa (CSA) and local broadcaster SuperSport are all set to launch a new T20 cricket league tournament from the year 2023. On April 29, there was an agreement between the two parties, under which a new T20 tournament would start as early as next year, with a total of six franchises set to participate in the tournament.
However, talks about the salary of the players and the main people are yet to be done. However, soon an auction will be held for the franchise to form their own team. The inaugural edition of the tournament will begin after the Proteas complete their tour of Australia later this year. A total of 33 matches will be played in a double round-robin league format, followed by three teams in the semi-finals and final.
Cricket South Africa CEO was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz that they all very excited about this new tournament and that the local and international sponsors and investors are showing their enthusiasm about the league. He further added that some people have invested in this tournament in small amounts and there is a lot of conversation going on among the players about the league.
Prior to this, CSA organized the Mzansi Super League. Which lasted for two years and was closed in 2019. Although this league seemed to be successful, the board thought that some changes should be made in it, due to which it had to be closed.
Now it remains to be seen how well this tournament proves to be for CSA. As always, the performance of young players will be a key factor for the development of the South African players through the league.
With this, Mark Jury, CEO of Supersports, said that he and his team are fully prepared to invest in the league and believes that it will completely change South African cricket.
