However, before the start of the game, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) honored its leading Test batsman Joe Root with a special surprise.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) interim President and non-executive Director of Cricket Martin Barlow presented Root the Silver Bat. Root was awarded with the honour for completing ten thousand in Test cricket.

Joe Root recently achieved the 10,000-run mark in the fourth innings of the first match of the Test series against New Zealand. He became the second batsman after former captain Alastair Cook to achieve this feat for England. It is a matter of coincidence that both achieved the feat at the age of 31 years 157 days.

Root batted brilliantly in that match and scored a century in the fourth innings for the first time in his Test career. He played an unbeaten 115 off 170 balls and helped his team win by 5 wickets.

Root is part of the Edgbaston Test against India, which was postponed during the last tour. Last year, Root captained the team against India but this time, after Joe Root stepped down from his position, Ben Stokes is the England Test captain.

Before Joe Root, 13 other Test cricket batsmen have achieved this feat. First of all, this feat was achieved by former Indian Test batsman Sunil Gavaskar. Since then Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardene, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kumar Sangakkara, Alastair Cook, Younis Khan and now Joe Root have reached the grand mark.
