West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith is currently playing his first season in the Indian Premier League. The Caribbean star started off well and won the Man of the Match award on his debut for a match-winning knock against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, in the last over of the match against the Gujarat Titans, Smith could not execute his plans well. It resulted in Punjab Kings’ defeat.
Odean Smith got the responsibility to bowl the 20th over when the Gujarat Titans required 19 runs off the last six balls. He started off with a wide, but followed it up with a great ball outside off. David Miller missed the delivery, but GT wanted a bye. Wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow ran out captain Hardik Pandya. It looked like that was the game for Punjab Kings.
New batter Rahul Tewatia then took a single, while David Miller smashed a four on the next ball. Still, GT needed 13 runs off the last three balls. Miller could not time the fourth delivery to perfection. The ball went to Odean, who tried to run Tewatia out at the non-striker’s end. But he missed the stumps and the ball went to the fielder in the deep.
Both batters took a run. After that, Tewatia smashed two sixes off two balls as Gujarat Titans stole a win from the jaws of defeat.
Twitterati feel the overthrow from Odean Smith proved costly in the end
Even if Odean Smith did not attempt a run out on the fourth ball, it would have been a dot. The equation would have been 13 runs off 2 balls. David Miller was not looking in great touch, so it could have been 99% Punjab Kings’ game. Even if Miller hit two maximums, it would have been a tie. But GT managed to win in the end.
Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted to that overthrow:
