“It was a foolish decision” – Shahid Afridi hits back at PCB selectors for Mohammad Haris selection

Pakistan’s young wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Haris recently made his debut for Pakistan in the ODI series played against the West Indies. He played all three ODIs but his performance was very disappointing.

He scored only 6 runs in two innings. After that, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi believes that selecting the player for ODIs on the basis of Pakistan Super League 2022 (PSL) performance was a ‘foolish decision’ by chief selector Mohammad Wasim.

Let us tell you, Mohammad Haris scored 166 runs in 5 PSL matches at a strike rate of 186.51, which included a half-century. Talking about List-A cricket, he has scored 544 runs in 23 matches at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 101.68. Even after the first match against West Indies, former cricketer Rashid Latif had criticized the selectors for selecting Haris in ODI cricket and now for this reason, Afridi has also raised questions on the selection committee.

Afridi said on Sama TV that it was a very stupid decision and that he would like to ask Mohammad Wasim the reason behind Haris’ inclusion into the team. He questioned how can a player be selected after only 2 matches and whether it is now really easy to get Pakistan team cap.

“It was a foolish decision by these people. I won’t say this to Ramiz Raja but if Mohammad Wasim is listening, I ask him to don’t take such steps,” said the former Pakistan skipper.

Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan is in really good form and scoring runs in Tests and T20s. However, his performance in ODI cricket has been quite mediocre. Rizwan has so far scored 982 runs in 47 ODIs at an average of 28. He scored just 85 runs in three matches against West Indies. With this, the selection of Harris in the team is raising questions about Rizwan’s future. However, Afridi supported Rizwan and said that he should enjoy ODI cricket.

He added that he himself want to see young players get opportunity, but when the team has players like Mohammad Rizwan and Sarfaraz Ahmad, Haris should have been given more opportunity in the domestic level first.
