Former Australian cricket team captain and World Cup winner in himself, Ricky Ponting has opened up on the chances of Pakistan cricket team winning the T20 World Cup 2022 to be played in Australia.
Pakistan cricket team is one of the top team in the world of cricket and boasts of several top quality players in the squad. While the team have not won any ICC Trophy after their 2017 ICC Champions Trophy win, they looking closer to have their hands on a trophy soon.
The Men in Green reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021 played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but suffered defeat against the eventual champions Australia. They go at it again this time around as they will be playing in the T20 World Cup 2022 to be played in Australia.
Meanwhile, while having a discussion on the ICC’s show The ICC Review show with the host Sanjana Ganesan, Ricky Ponting answered several questions regarding the upcoming T20 World Cup.
During his discussion on the show, he also touched upon the chances of the Pakistan team winning the competition. Ponting said that the key to Pakistan’s T20 World Cup win is their captain Babar Azam.
Ponting said that if Pakistan captain Babar Azam doesn’t have a good campaign in the T20 World Cup, then he doesn’t fancy Pakistan having any chance of winning the competition.
“If Babar doesn’t have a great tournament, I don’t think they can win,” said the former Australia skipper. He further added that he saw Babar up and close during the Test series between Pakistan and Australia couple years back and said he believed that sky is the limit for the right-hand batsman.
Talking of Babar Azam, he is been in really great form from the last 2 or 3 years and is a very important member of the Pakistan cricket team. He forms a great partnership with the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan. Azam has played 74 T20I matches and has scored 2686 runs at an average of 45.5 and strike rate of near about 130.
