“Playing for Country is bigger than IPL” – Dean Elgar urges South African players to prioritize country over IPL

The Indian Premier League is one of the best sports leagues in the world for many reasons. And that’s why players across the world desire to play in the IPL. And the 15th edition of the marquee league will begin on March 26. It will be a two-month long tournament, in which the final will be played on May 29th, 2022. It means that the international players that will be part of the league will have to compromise with their country’s duties. And that’s what South Africa skipper Dean Elgar has urged on his team members.

South Africa is scheduled to play two tests between March 31st and April 12th. And there are many players who might miss the series because of the IPL. The Southpaw stated that he got a call from the CSA official regarding the availability of the players for the Bangladesh series. And so it’s up to players now to decide whether they will be available for the country or not.

As quoted by Cricbuzz, Elgar stated that the IPL contracted players will have a week’s time to take their decisions. In addition to that, the left-hander said that it would be totally the choice of players whether they wanted to give their services to the test side or not.

The Proteas skipper pointed out that it is only because of the country that the players get to play in the IPL. And they must not forget that playing the tests and ODIS has given them this opportunity. And it will be more clear in a week’s time how loyal they are to the country. However, he also said that it is tough for the players as well to choose.
