Cricket has been evolving over the years and T20 cricket is a result of that evolution. However, T20 cricket has become a fan favourite format. The format and short and doesn’t take too much time to finish a match, which is what making the T20 format the most enjoyable one.
After the success of the T20 cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the formation of the T20 World Cup, which was first held in the year 2007. And today, T20 World Cup is one of most prestigious competition. Every player desires to win the Trophy, especially the joy of lifting the Trophy as the captain of the country.
So far, the T20 World Cup has been conducted a total of 7 times with West Indies being the only team to win the Trophy more than once, both under the same captain. So today, we take a look at what are the all T20 World Cup winning captains are upto now.
Aaron Finch – Australia – 2021
Australian cricket team won their first T20 World Cup only in the most recent edition. While Australia is the most successful team in the 50 over World Cup, they had to wait a very long but it was Aaron Finch who guided the Aussies to their first T20 World Cup. Finch is still playing and is even likely to lead the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2022 to be played in Australia itself.
Darren Sammy – West Indies – 2012, 2016
West Indies is known for their hard-hitting style of play, which is why there is no doubt that the mighty Carribbeans are the most successful team in the history of the T20 World Cup. They won the competition in 2012 and in 2016, both under the captaincy of Darren Sammy, who nowadays pursuing a role as a commentator.
Lasith Malinga – Sri Lanka- 2014
The 2014 edition of the gala event was held in Sri Lanka it was the home team who won the competition under the captaincy of Lasith Malinga, beating Team India in the final of the tournament. It was Sri Lanka’s first hand on the Trophy as well. As for Malinga, is currently serving as a bowling coach for the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and Sri Lankan cricket team mentor.
Paul Collingwood – England – 2010
The T20 World Cup was played two year in a row when the competition was held in 2010 to avoid conflict with the Cricket World Cup in 2011. England won the competition that year under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood, who is currently serving as the assistant coach of the England team.
Younis Khan – Pakistan – 2009
After Misbah-ul-Haq’s Pakistan team failed to win the Trophy in the inaugural edition, Younis Khan led the team to a further step and won the tournament in 2009. Younis Khan took up the coaching role after his retirement, but that didn’t work for him.
MS Dhoni – India – 2007
MS Dhoni led an young Indian side to the T20 World Cup success in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007. Dhoni’s Team India defeated the Pakistan team in a thrilling match to seal the Trophy. As for Dhoni, he most recently turned 41 and is still playing in the IPL though, however has retired from International cricket. He was also part of the Indian team as mentor of the team in the T20 World Cup 2021.
