After retiring from international cricket, there have been very few players who have kept themselves away from cricket. In such a situation, most of the players try their hand as a commentator after retirement. All the popular commentators from Sunil Gavaskar to Aakash Chopra have represented India at the international level at one point or another.
There are many such players in the current Indian team with whom some players who played in the team with them in the early stages are today associated with the cricket world as commentator. Similarly, in the 2007 T20 World Cup, there were many players who played with the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma and are doing commentary today.
In this article, we take a look at 4 of Rohit Sharma’s teammates from the 2007 T20 World Cup squad who are now doing commentary.
Virender Sehwag
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was part of the team along with Rohit Sharma in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Sehwag had scored 133 runs in five innings of that tournament at an average of 26.60 and a strike rate of 138.54, including a half-century.
Sehwag, who played countless explosive innings with his bat for almost 14 years, said goodbye to international cricket in 2015. After retiring from international cricket, the veteran player is now seen in the role of a commentator.
Piyush Chawla
Piyush Chawla, who played his first T20 match in 2010, was also part of the team in the 2007 T20 World Cup but he did not get a chance to play a single match in that World Cup. The 33-year-old Piyush Chawla played his last international match in 2012. Chawla was seen playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL last year and this year he remained unsold. Chawla has not yet announced his retirement from international cricket but he was seen as a commentator in IPL 2022 and India’s away tours.
RP Singh
In the 2007 T20 World Cup, India’s highest wicket-taker fast bowler RP Singh was instrumental in winning the tournament. Taking 12 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 12.67 and economy of 6.33, RP Singh was the second highest wicket-taker of that tournament. He announced his retirement in September 2018, is now seen as a commentator.
Irfan Pathan
Irfan Pathan, who was the leading all-rounder of the Indian ODI team, had a strong debut in T20 cricket as well. He played 7 matches in the 2007 T20 World Cup and took 10 wickets with an economy of 6.77. Despite performing brilliantly in the T20 World Cup, Irfan Pathan could play only 24 matches in his six-year long T20 career in which he took 28 wickets at an economy of 8.02 and an average of 22.07. Irfan is seen doing commentary after saying goodbye to international cricket in 2020.
