The opening duo provided a fine start to the home side, adding 64 runs for the first wicket in 7.3 overs. Wes Agar broke the partnership by picking up the wicket of Cutting, but Gilkes held one end and remained in the middle till the final over.

The opening batter played a fantastic knock of 93 runs off just 57 balls, a knock where he smashed nine fours and three sixes while batting at a strike rate of 163.
