On Wednesday during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match, the Rajasthan Royals team successfully defended against the Chennai Super Kings, despite a close call from captain MS Dhoni in the final over. Sandeep Sharma remained composed and prevented Dhoni from hitting a last-ball six to secure the victory.
Dhoni had already hit two sixes in the over, but was unable to hit a third to take his team to victory. Despite the loss, Dhoni showcased his ability to lead his team and finish run-chases, especially as this was his 200th match as captain of the Super Kings franchise.
However, following the match in which the Super Kings finished 3 runs behind Rajasthan’s total, a 9 years old tweet from Dhoni’s past resurfaced online.
In the tweet, Dhoni had written: “Doesn’t matter which team wins, I am here for entertainment”.
On Wednesday night, the statement was widely accepted by fans as MS Dhoni, despite not being able to lead CSK past RR’s total, provided an exciting batting display. Dhoni’s efforts were entertaining and appreciated by the audience.
Chennai Super Kings were chasing a target of 176 runs for victory and were struggling at 113-6 when MS Dhoni (32) joined Ravindra Jadeja (25) at the crease. The duo formed an unbeaten partnership of 59 runs, but could not guide their team to victory as they fell short of Rajasthan Royals’ total of 175-8 by three runs.
However, Dhoni showcased his vintage form by hitting two sixes off Sandeep Sharma’s bowling in the final over, with Chennai needing 21 runs to win from the last six balls. Despite the pressure, Sharma maintained his composure and delivered two yorkers to prevent Dhoni and Chennai from completing a miraculous comeback. As a result, Chennai Super Kings ended their innings at 172-6 and lost the match.
