MI Cape Town

The inaugural edition of the South Africa’s premier T20 league, the SA20 League has reached its end of the league stage and the picture of the teams making it to playoffs is almost clear.

But you can be assured that of all the 4 teams that will qualify for the semi-finals of the SA20 League, it won’t be MI Cape Town, the team that was pre-season favorite to win the whole thing just by the strength of their team.

But there is a saying that the game is not won on paper but on the field and certainly Cape Town failed to live-up to all the expectations by the team’s fans. They had the services of the likes of Dewald Brevis, Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada, Tim David, Sam Curran and Rassie van der Russen to name a few.

But now that the team has failed to progress to the next round, they would now look ahead and plan for the future. And in today’s article, we will take a look at 5 players MI Cape Town might release ahead of SA20 League 2024 edition.

Ryan Rickelton

The 26-years-old South African opening batsman Ryan Rickelton is a promising player but he didn’t had a good season with the MI Cape Town team in the SA20 League. Rickelton could only score 146 runs in 7 matches with an average of 20.85 and a strike rate of just 113, which is considered really bad in the T20 format of the game. He could be one of the players who might be released ahead of SA20 League in 2024.

Delano Potgieter

Another 26-years-old batsman who could be shown his way out of the team ahead of the SA20 League 2024 is middle-order batsman Delano Potgieter, who could only score 81 runs in 6 innings with a strike rate of 161, but his inconsistency on playing big innings could lead him to get sacked.

Tim David

The Australian all-rounder Tim David made huge headlines with his performance in the IPL 2022 for the Mumbai Indians side. However, was brought in a short-term replacement to the MI Cape Town and played 3 matches and could only score 35 runs with his best being 33 runs. His strike rate was just 116, which is quite low for a hard-hitting finisher like him. He might not only be released for his performance reason, but Mumbai Indians would like to play in the Big Bash League next year and get into the IPL 2024.

Duan Jansen

The 22-years-old Duan Jansen, the twin brother of Marco Jansen, could be another pacer who started with a MI franchise (Marco Jansen started with Mumbai Indians) and then move on. Jansen could only play 4 matches due to the quality of pacers that MI Cape Town possess. He might be released because of that as he would like to look for more playing time elsewhere. He took 4 wickets in as many matches for Cape Town.

Sam Curran might be released by MI Cape Town

And the last name in this list is none other than Sam Curran, who recently became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL after Punjab Kings splashed money like water for him. There was a lot of expectations from Sam from Cape Town fans, but he failed miserably with both the bat and ball. He scored 72 runs and took 7 wickets in 9 matches for the Cape Town team, as of writing this, they are yet to play Joburg Super Kings on 6th February.
